Perdepera Resort Revolutionises Customer Experience with New All Optical Network

Simone Ammendola, CEO of Perdepera Resort: “To meet the opportunities and challenges of the hotel industry, we needed to upgrade our network deployment to carry more complex customer requirements and services"

About Perdepera Resort

Perdepera Resort is a resort on the eastern coastline of Sardinia, Italy. Sardinia is a southern Italian island with unique hills, valleys, parks, historical and archaeological sites. The island has plains and granite mountains, gorgeous beaches and a Mediterranean climate. Perdepera Resort is named after the beach on which it stands, on the outskirts of the municipality of Cardedu, and is comprised of 131 independent villas. Over the years, Perdepera Resort has become a tourist paradise for families, couples, and friends.

Challenges of a new tourism boom

Following the Covid-19 pandemic, the tourism industry has been recovering rapidly. The newly explosive enthusiasm for travelling brings challenges to the hotel service industry regarding how to improve customer experience.

Simone Ammendola, CEO of Perdepera Resort, explains the need for improved digital infrastructure during this period of recovery: “Since the tourism industry recovered from 2021, hotel booking has been increasing, especially during the summer vacation. Digitalization and sustainable reconstruction of hotel facilities are being carried out rapidly. We also actively promote improving the quality for our guests by providing services in all aspects.

“The network application required by the guests has gradually expanded from online entertainment to various intelligent applications, such as high-speed internet access, smart check-in, IoT room control and online meetings, posing higher requirements for the network construction.

“To meet the opportunities and challenges of the hotel industry, we need to upgrade our network deployment to carry more complex customer requirements and services.” Simone says.

Perdepera Resort needed an upgraded network that could handle the requirements of all the guests across the premises. “Before the introduction of our fibre network, the distribution of Wi-Fi was only on the common parts of the resort, such as the swimming pool, bar, restaurants, amphitheatre and the reception. We didn't have the coverage of internet inside our rooms,” explains Daniele Ammendola, IT Director.

Tiscali’s Huawei Solution

Perdepera partnered with Tiscali to provide a Huawei FTTO solution to improve the Wi-Fi 6 coverage the entirety of the resort, which would significantly improve the customer experience.

“Perdepera resort was running an old-fashioned network that didn't satisfy all their needs anymore in terms of bandwidth and coverage, so they could not provide all the services they wanted,” says Francesco Boi, Network Engineering Manager at Tiscali. “We decided to develop a FTTO network that was running on POL(Passive Optical LAN) technology, and with the installation of a single ONT bridge in each room, providing wireless coverage and Internet cabling to get internet access, and also to enable a flexible, reliable and powerful connection.”

Common indoor and outdoor areas can leverage the same class of devices, allowing a wider reach in more crowded places, supporting concurrent high-speed connections at the same time and granting a mesh coverage all over the resort.

By using Huawei advanced tools, Tiscali was able to simulate the final solution in the nearest scenario to the real environment - Planning the best coverage and confirming all calculations with an on-site survey.

A Robust Network Covering the Entire Resort

In the past, overlapping networks caused increasing maintenance costs and difficulty in fault locating. Huawei’s solution provides a single network with multiple services. Based on fiber, the new network provided by Huawei reduces cabling difficulty, and significantly improves network deployment efficiency. The network can also be extended to every corner of the resort and provide high-quality network coverage to all indoor and outdoor areas of the resort, meeting the development requirements of smart applications.

For indoor scenarios, one bridge-type optical terminal is deployed in each villa connected to a Wi-Fi 6 indoor AP to provide ultra-band wireless and gigabit wired network access, so guests can watch videos, play games, have video calls and do other activities with no network latency in their hotel room.

In other places such as reception areas, dining room, shops and the lounge, as the new Wi-Fi 6 AP increases the coverage rate by 20%, guests can also have high-quality mobile roaming and internet access experiences everywhere across the hotel property, without network freezing or video interruption.

As for outdoor areas such as swimming pools, theaters, and the seaside, the network expands to every corner of the resort, enabling guests to enjoy a stable and high-speed network anytime and anywhere in the resort. Moreover, the network architecture is flexible and available to upgrade to more bandwidth, carrying more services in the future.

Simplified Equipment for Efficient Installation & Maintenance

The deployment of traditional wiring services requires professional engineers to carry out on-site configuration which reduces O&M efficiency. With the sharp increase in the number of end terminals, application types and scenarios are more complex, services are invisible, fault locating is difficult, and O&M costs are high. With the Huawei FTTO solution, all O&M operations can be completed in the office with no more than one engineer at any time. Fault locating time have been decreased by 50% on average, and maintenance costs have been reduced by 70%. Simplified cabling deployment and easy installation/uninstallation make O&M work much easier.

The core equipment of Perdepera Resort is simple and tidy, centrally managing the entire network, because the P2MP architecture effectively reduces cabling. They use ODN to split more fibres directly to the hotel rooms. Once plugged in, the ONU can be used immediately.

Thanks to the mature, integrated and ready-to-go features of Huawei FTTO solution, Perdepera can quickly deliver all devices and deploy in a centralized manner. Huawei brings a digitalization and technology transformation with sustainable, reliable, and simplified services to help build a smart, intelligent hotel. In the future, with the help of Huawei, Perdepera Resort can provide the customer-oriented services with high efficiency, quality and technology.

“Thanks to Huawei collaboration, we were able to rapidly deliver all equipment and deploy them with an easy-to-use cloud dashboard,” Boi says. “Tiscali is now Perdepera Resort's connection provider. And thanks to our 20 years of experience and the best technical support on the market, together with Huawei we can guarantee full satisfaction for both Perdepera Resort and their guests.”

The CEO of Perdepera adds, “Thanks to the mature, integrated, ready-to-go features of Huawei “Fiber to the Room” solution, we can quickly deliver all devices and deploy in a centralised manner. Huawei brings us to a digitalization and technology transformation with sustainable, reliable, and simplified service to help us to be a smart, intelligent hotel. In the future, with the help of Huawei, we hope Perdepera Resort can provide the customer-oriented services with high efficiency, quality, and technology.”
