Bank Moves Ahead with Secure Mobility, BYOD

2013/12/25 14:35:31

China Minsheng Banking Corp., Ltd. (CMBC), China’s first national joint-stock commercial bank, with investments mainly from non-state-owned enterprises, has contributed to innovations in the Chinese banking industry. It has explored business opportunities, expanded its assets, improved its profitability, and maintained rapid and healthy growth. The pervasive use of smart devices and the fast growth of mobile communications around the world have prompted CMBC’s IT department to deploy a variety of mobile services, including mobile marketing, the mobile office, and mobile operations in order to provide better services to its customers.

CMBC permitted employees to Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) to work for ordinary, non-confidential office matters. CMBC also provided company-issued devices with more customizable security features than BYOD devices. Company-issued devices enable employees to access mobile applications that are inaccessible through BYOD devices. Although assigning anywhere, anytime access rights to employees is in line with corporate interests and helps improve employee productivity, it also may incur security risks.

Both BYOD and company-issued devices use 3G, 4G, and Wi-Fi as transmission channels to securely access the company’s internal networks. However, CMBC still faced many challenges:

  • Access by unauthorized or virus-infected devices
  • Untrusted network transmission over public Wi-Fi hotspots
  • A mobile system may not be strong enough to fend off new kinds of attacks, leaving the bank at risk
  • Easier dissemination of company information increases the probability of information leakage
  • Application management and control may not be strict enough, leading to unauthorized access to confidential corporate data or data leakage

The IT department decided that CMBC needed a more powerful security system and chose Huawei’s solution. Huawei’s BYOD-capable mobility security protection solution ensures end-to-end security for smart devices, networks, applications, and data centers. The solution includes:

  • An AnyOffice client that encrypts and securely stores data on smart devices
  • Unique sandbox technology that isolates corporate data from personal user data on smart devices
  • Huawei’s security Software Development Kit that makes it easy to integrate with other systems and to develop specific custom applications
  • Application-level virtual private network technology that ensures secure network transmission
  • A mobile secure access management platform that offers device security and application management for the full life cycle of the device

What’s more, Huawei’s Mobile Device Management (MDM) system helped CMBC build a more advanced, stringent security control system to protect its banking processes:

  • Certificate-based authentication of Wi-Fi access for mobile devices to prevent decryption attacks
  • Verification of GPS-based map information by accessing map server websites through Huawei gateways

The Huawei solution enables quick customization to respond to fast-changing mobile services in the banking industry. Custom functions include CMBC news, limited Wi-Fi connections, custom client logos and titles, and location-based security control.

Other trouble-free mobility features:

  • CMBC card personnel can complete and approve card applications within 15 minutes
  • The paperless office greatly simplifies office work and reduces labor costs
  • The mobile office extends bank services to remote areas
  • Personalized marketing and streamlined business strategies

With their company-issued devices, employees can remotely access PC desktops, desktop clouds, and key enterprise applications. With BYOD, they can:

  • Send and receive emails
  • Be notified of to-do tasks
  • Access office automation systems
  • Submit and approve to-do tasks
  • Conduct instant communication (including instant messaging, voice communication, and video and data conferencing)
  • Log in to employee forums, and conduct mobile marketing

What’s more, Huawei delivers timely, global technology support services to CMBC and its customers, which help CMBC further advance its global business strategies.
