Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (or “Prasarana”), formerly known as Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad, is a 100 percent government-owned company which was set up by the Malaysian Ministry of Finance. It is one of the largest public transport companies in Malaysia to operate bus and light metro services via its wholly owned subsidiaries: Rapid Bus and Rapid Rail.
The goal of the extension to the Ampang Line Light Rail Transit (“Ampang LRT”) was to expand Kuala Lumpur’s public transport network to the suburbs of Puchong and Putra Heights. The project planned to add 18 kilometers of new track, 11 new stations, a control center, a rolling stock depot and 10 traction substations to the existing 27 kilometer railway line (consisting of 25 stations, a control center, a rolling stock depot, and 17 traction substations).
Since Prasarana took over the operations of the Ampang LRT, the company has faced a number of technical challenges:
Cutting-edge and future-oriented ICT technologies needed to be implemented to upgrade to a new signaling system, capable of satisfying the ever-increasing service demands for the next five to fifteen years.
The Ampang LRT Extension Project marks the first time that Huawei acted as a Systems Integrator, assuming the complete scope of the railway telecommunications systems. Working closely with George Kent, the overall Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) solutions provider for this project, Huawei provided an integrated communications system consisting of: A transmission system (backbone), datacom, trunking radio, office telephone, Passenger Help Points (PHP), voice recording, Public Address (PA) system, clock and Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) subsystems, as well as the optical cables and other railway communication devices. Huawei was also responsible for the entire engineering process from design, installation, commissioning, and acceptance.
The integration of such a broad communications system involved complex interfaces, high risks (coordinating and supervising third-party device and service suppliers), and difficulties with overlapping construction and commissioning scenarios. Additionally, strict management was required for all project documentation generated during the design; management; implementation; Reliability, Availability and Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) study; and testing processes. To address these challenges, Huawei leveraged its strong services capabilities, reliable products, and solutions to implement an end-to-end integrated communications solution, as well as providing delivery services throughout the project.
To build the communications and transmission system, Huawei OSN3500 transmission products were deployed along the extension line to construct a 10G backbone transmission network and deliver mission-critical services, coupled with Huawei S3700 switches which provide access to the specified services. In addition, Huawei S5700 switches were deployed to form four independent IP rings to carry non-mission-critical IP services. The new transmission system is able to interconnect and interwork with the existing transmission system in the following ways:
Moreover, Huawei provided Prasarana with EN 50126-compliant end-to-end system assurance services. Specifically, EMC assurance services include site surveys, the formulation of EMC standards and relevant processes, subsystem certification, and on-site EMC testing. RAMS assurance services include development of reliability schemes and establishing system reliability prediction models. Security analysis and certification services cover the whole process from design to operation. Last but not least, a comprehensive QA system was set up to ensure the quality of all design and delivery activities.
Leveraging the company’s all-round interface management capabilities, powerful integration verification platforms, and sound organizational processes, Huawei sufficiently verified the functions and performance of interfaces between subsystems by means of pre-integration verification (only for short-list suppliers), with both integration and on-site verification. This ensures stable and reliable interoperability between subsystems, saves integration and commissioning time for the customer, and facilitated timely and efficient delivery of the communications system.
The extension project is expected to double the capacity of the Ampang Line system network to more than 400,000 passengers per day, and significantly ease traffic congestion in the southwest areas of Kuala Lumpur.
Construction and reconstruction of ICT infrastructures enabled by cutting-edge technologies will help Prasarana ensure the reliable operations of the Ampang line, improve O&M efficiency, cut down on maintenance costs, and provide an optimal passenger experience.
After the construction is completed, Huawei’s urban rail solution will continue to bring more stable, reliable, and innovative ICT services to Prasarana which helps Malaysia to build a state-of-the-art public transportation system in the future.
