Shenzhen Media Group (SZMG) is a media production and broadcast company specializing in news, music, and talk shows for TV and the Internet. The company offers mobile, digital, and satellite TV, pay channels, shopping channels, broadband access, and social media, IPTV, and OTT services. SZMG operates twelve TV channels, four radio stations, and several media websites. Holdings include video, film, and sound studios, broadcast transmission centers, and advertising agencies.

As the news leader in the region, SZMG wanted to speed news rollouts and optimize production and distribution by replacing its inefficient studio model with a new collaborative business model. To accomplish this, SZMG aimed to diversify its news collection, production, and release processes through various channels, including social media.


If journalists can edit audio, video, images, and texts in their offices, news production is greatly simplified. SZMG wanted to converge all of its different platforms — its news center, production platform, omnimedia aggregation platform, omnimedia release platform, and news operation and command platform — into a production and operation center for traditional and HD media. This would require a new architecture with fast and reliable access to storage.

Storage requirements included online storage, archiving, and emergency backup. The overall storage system design needed to maximize resources for all kinds of multimedia and non-media files, including video and audio clips, transcripts, and graphics. Secure, reliable data storage was needed to support omnimedia exchange, converged production and release, and diverse data and service types. Collaborative data access would also need to be integrated into the production workflow, from video and audio ingestion through to editing and distribution. Production would then allow media elements to easily exchange between the omnimedia convergence and co-production platforms, as well as all of the various storage systems.

  • The online storage system needed to support integrated online production and archive processes. Stored data included high-bit-rate video and audio files in a variety of formats. Stable, high bandwidth was essential for video and audio ingesting, editing, and broadcasting. Total bandwidth of 13.375 GB/s and available storage capacity of 1,100 TB was required for resilient online storage performance.
  • A large-capacity archive would store historical materials for fast retrieval. SZMG required quick migration of one-year storage of historical materials from the archive to online storage through the production service archive process as well as expansion capabilities for future storage needs.

Huawei proposed its proven, stable media cloud solution, which provides co-platform video production with multi-channel distribution and a Big Data converged resource pool. After rigorous testing, SZMG deployed Huawei’s OceanStor 9000 Storage Solution for its all-IP storage architecture and overall performance.


The OceanStor 9000 works with Huawei’s Convergent Media Cloud Solution to create an omnimedia data production, programming, and broadcasting platform. The hybrid cloud video editing system includes a public cloud located outside of the TV station (with low-bit-rate editing capabilities) and a private cloud within the TV station (with 6-layer, high-bit-rate HD video editing capabilities). The public cloud platform integrates flexible computing resource pools and media resource pools with an all-IP network infrastructure. It supports video editing, transcoding, and rendering, enabling journalists to collect, edit, and upload video footage anytime, anywhere.

Two OceanStor 9000 storage systems support the different types of data: one for high-performance online storage and the other for large-capacity archive storage. The solution’s symmetric distributed storage architecture combines online and archive storage into a virtualized 40 PB single file system (scalable up to 288 nodes).

The OceanStor 9000 virtual storage resource pool includes 30 nodes (20 for online storage and 10 for archive storage) for sharing and allocating resources on demand with the lowest latency. Tiered storage provides protection for media and data files.

The OceanStor 9000 solution:

  • Supports 10 GE, 40 GE InfiniBand (IB), and GE network connections, provides a stable bandwidth of 500 MB/s and a maximum bandwidth per node of up to 600 MB/s, fully meeting the requirements of the upper-layer media editing software.
  • Scales linearly from 3 to 288 nodes and supports a single file system with up to 40 PB of capacity.
  • Uses a fully symmetrical distributed architecture, which enables performance and capacity to increase linearly as nodes are added.
  • Employs full system redundancy to ensure system reliability and eliminate single-point failures; N+1 to N+4 data protections ensure file-level data protection.


OceanStor 9000’s all-IP networking architecture optimizes both online and offline storage systems and enables shared network aggregation, production, and distribution services for traditional TV and Internet. The hybrid editing platform and all-channel distribution, adaptation, and broadcasting platform significantly shortens production and rollout time, while improving timeliness and interactivity for collecting, editing, and launching new services. It also supports emerging services in a variety of media formats during production, storage exchange, and distribution, such as the transition from standard definition to HD, and now 4K Ultra-HD. Total bandwidth of 13.375 GB/s and available storage capacity of 1,100 TB offer resilient online storage performance and flexible expansion.

The Huawei converged news center supports 160 workstations, a virtual PB-level storage resource pool, high throughput, large capacity, and global resource sharing. By optimizing production with the Huawei OceanStor 9000, SZMG is well positioned to maintain its news leadership and meet its business goals in new and existing markets.
